Phansidewa, 12th July: A shocking incident surfaced from the Shakti Nagar area in Phansidewa where a woman was arrested on charges of brutally assaulting and attempting to burn a woman civic volunteer. The injured victim, Mampi Debnath Maitra, works as a civic volunteer in Phansidewa. The accused, identified as Chirta Debnath, is the aunt of the victim.
As per details received, the incident took place when Mampi was preparing the meal after returning from duty. During this, the accused Chirta brutally assaulted pregnant Mampi over an altercation concerning money. Following the assault, the accused allegedly poured kerosene and set the unconscious Mampi on fire. Subsequently, she looted gold jewellery and cash from the house before absconding.
Mampi managed to extinguish the flames while the alarmed locals rescued and admitted her to the Phansidewa Rural Hospital. However, due to her critical condition, she was transferred to a private hospital in Siliguri. Meanwhile, the victim’s family filed a formal complaint at the Phansidewa police station and the accused Chirta was arrested. On Friday, the accused was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court while the victim’s family are demanding strict punishment for the accused.
