Wild elephant herd swept away at Gajoldoba Teesta barrage

Gajoldoba, 19th June: A herd of wild elephants was swept away in the Teesta River at the Gajoldoba Teesta barrage in Jalpaiguri around 11 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Reports indicate that the elephants became trapped in the barrage gate while floating in the river’s current. The situation was quickly noticed by locals and barrage workers, who initiated rescue efforts. Despite their attempts, the strong current at the gate made it impossible to rescue the elephants.

In the end, the gate was opened, allowing the elephants to float away. They were later seen safely climbing to the other side of the river.
