Wild elephant enters North Bengal University campus, forest officials monitor situation

Bagdogra, 19th April: Panic spread across the North Bengal University (NBU) campus after a wild elephant strayed into the premises late Friday night, causing damage to property and alarming local residents.

According to reports, the elephant emerged from the nearby forest and entered the campus via the Balasan River, reportedly in search of food. In the process, the tusker damaged a shop, the university’s boundary wall, and its gate.

Forest officials from Bagdogra and Bamanpokhri rushed to the spot and have been closely monitoring the elephant, which is currently inside the university forest area. Given the proximity of a residential colony to the university, officials are on high alert to prevent any untoward incident.

Assistant Divisional Forest Officer (ADFO) Rahul Deb Mukherjee stated that the department will attempt to guide the elephant back to the Bagdogra forest area after sunset.
