Siliguri, 13th January: A major case of liquor smuggling disguised as vegetables has been uncovered in Siliguri. Acting on a tip-off, Khalpara Outpost police intercepted a goods vehicle carrying vegetables on Burdwan Road late on Monday night and discovered large quantities of liquor hidden under sacks of potatoes. The driver managed to escape during the operation.
Police sources stated that a total of ten cartons of illegal liquor were seized from the vehicle, with an estimated market value running into several lakh rupees. Most of the confiscated liquor is reportedly from Sikkim and was allegedly intended to be illegally transported to Bihar via Siliguri.
The police have launched a hunt for the vehicle owner and the absconding driver based on the vehicle number. Investigations are also underway to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
Khalpara Outpost police continue to conduct a thorough probe into the case and have intensified efforts to apprehend the fugitive driver.
