Siliguri, 15th March: The pollution Control Department is highly concerned regarding the rising pollution level in the Mahananda River. It has been learned that the level of coliform in the river water has increased from 2500 to lakhs. Siliguri Municipal Corporation has received several directives from the Green Tribunal to control pollution immediately.
On Tuesday, Mayor Goutam Deb and Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar held an urgent meeting with the councilors of wards adjacent to the river. Discussions were held on how to decontaminate the river. Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar said that although SMC is planning to evict illegal cattle shed, the final decision will be taken after holding discussions. He also said that all the directions of the Green Tribunal will be followed to control the pollution of the river.
