Siliguri, 24th February: Councillor of Ward No. 20 of Siliguri has started a new and unique initiative of providing one kg of rice in exchange for 119 plastics and one plastic bottle. The initiative has been started to keep the city clean and plastic-free.
Apart from banning plastic, continuous campaigns are being conducted in several markets. Despite this, the use of plastic has not stopped completely. Keeping this in mind, councillor Abhay Basu started an innovative program to make his ward plastic-free.
Today, councillor Abhay Basu gave one kilo of rice to the people in exchange for 119 plastic and one plastic bottle in front of the councillor’s office adjacent to Bagrakote of Ward No. 20. Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation Goutam Deb, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar and others were present on the occasion. During this, Mayor Goutam Deb appreciated Basu’s unique initiative.
On the other hand, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar said that single-use plastic is harmful to society and has appealed to people to stop using it. During the campaign, Abhay Basu said that several people in the ward do not have BPL cards and also many people are unemployed. But with such a program, along with making the city clean, they can also help such people. He told that they will continue the work further to make a plastic-free ward.
