Rajganj, 23rd May: A section of an under-construction culvert collapsed in the Hariyar Bari area under Majhiali Gram Panchayat in Rajganj block, raising concerns among residents over alleged substandard construction work.
According to reports, the original culvert on the Bandhunagar-Kalinagar paved road collapsed about a year ago. Reconstruction began with financial assistance from the West Bengal State Rural Development Agency (WBSRDA) at an estimated cost of Rs 54 lakh. However, locals claim poor-quality materials have been used since the beginning of the project. Despite repeated complaints, no corrective measures were reportedly taken by either the officials or the contractor.
The partial collapse on Thursday has intensified public concern about the durability of the structure once completed. Residents have demanded strict action, including the use of proper construction materials and the cancellation of the contractor’s license.
Majhiali Gram Panchayat Pradhan Sumit Dutta stated that although he secured funding for the project, the contractor and engineer failed to provide clear details about the cost and execution plan. He assured that he would report the matter in writing to the Zilla Parishad and other concerned authorities.
Meanwhile, contractor Sandeep Bhowmik denied that the culvert collapsed, attributing the issue to soil erosion caused by heavy rain. He claimed that the affected portion was deliberately demolished after it was found to have settled due to erosion beneath the structure.
