Siliguri, 22nd April: In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of NJP GRP arrested two women with 36 kg of cannabis from the general compartment of the Rani Kamalapati Express train at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station.
The accused have been identified as Sangeeta Devi and Sugiya Devi, both residents of Nalanda district in Bihar. According to GRP sources, the two were travelling from Agartala in Tripura to Barauni in Bihar when NJP GRP received a tip-off about possible drug smuggling on the train.
Acting swiftly, the SOG team conducted a search operation as soon as the train arrived at NJP station. On checking the luggage of the two women, officials recovered eight packets of cannabis weighing a total of 36 kg.
Following the seizure, both women were handed over to GRP officials and arrested under the NDPS Act. They were produced in Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday. The GRP has sought police remand to further investigate the smuggling network involved.
