Siliguri, 21st April: Police from Pradhan Nagar police station have arrested two women, Rinki Devi and Usha Devi, in connection with a theft carried out under the guise of garbage collection. Both accused are residents of Rajendra Nagar in Kulipara, under Ward No. 01 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
Reportedly, for the past few days, multiple theft complaints were being reported in the Pradhan Nagar area. One such incident occurred on April 13 at an electronics shop, where thieves broke in through the tin roof during the night and made off with items worth ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh.
Following a complaint lodged by shop owner Om Prakash Gupta, police launched an investigation and managed to crack the case within hours. CCTV footage and interrogation led to the arrest of the two women, and half of the stolen goods were recovered.
According to police sources, a women-led gang was operating in Siliguri, using garbage collection as a cover for committing thefts. The two accused were produced before Siliguri court on Monday. Efforts are on to recover the remaining stolen items and identify other gang members involved.
