Siliguri, 30th October: The search is on for two men who allegedly posed as police officials and duped a woman of ornaments worth around Rs 8 lakh in Punjabipara of Siliguri’s Ward No. 13, on Saturday.
According to the information, a Milanpally resident was on her way to the market in a toto at Punjabipara this morning when she was stopped by the two accused, who were on a motorcycle. The duo allegedly introduced themselves as policemen and told her that wearing excessive ornaments in public would attract a fine of Rs 5,000. They asked her to remove her all ornaments for safety and put them away in her bag. Startled by the sudden confrontation, the woman took off all of her ornaments and handed them to the duo who then wrapped the ornaments in paper and placed it inside her bag.
After reaching home, the woman checked her bag and found iron bands instead of her ornaments wrapped in paper. The woman alleged that she was wearing gold ornaments worth around Rs 8 lakh. After the matter came to light, a team of Siliguri Police Station and Panitanki Out Post have initiated an investigation and are looking into the CCTV footage of the said area to track down the crooks.
