Rajganj, 24th December: Two people, including a Trinamool Congress leader, were killed after being hit by a speeding small goods vehicle in Rajganj, triggering tension and unrest in the area.
The deceased have been identified as Uttam Roy, Anchal Sabhapati of the Trinamool Congress from Panikauri Gram Panchayat, and 18-year-old Molin Roy, a resident of the Sarkarpara area.
According to local sources, the incident occurred on Tuesday night when a small goods vehicle, speeding from the Belakoba side, first hit Molin Roy in the Sarkarpara area. He was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
While attempting to flee, the vehicle caused another accident near the Bagdogra Office More area. At the time, Uttam Roy was returning home on his motorcycle. He was critically injured after being hit by the goods vehicle. Local residents rushed him to a private hospital in Fulbari, where doctors declared him dead.
As news of the incident spread, tension escalated in the area. Angry locals set the goods vehicle on fire. A large contingent of police from Rajganj police station and Belakoba Outpost reached the spot, recovered the vehicle, and brought the situation under control. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
On Wednesday, Rajganj MLA Khageswar Roy, along with Trinamool Congress Rajganj block president Arindam Banerjee and other party leaders, visited the homes of both Uttam Roy and Molin Roy. They met the grieving families and expressed their condolences.
