Siliguri, 06th June: In a shocking incident, Pradhan Nagar police arrested a woman for committing theft in her own house during her mother’s absence. Additionally, a jewellery shop owner was also arrested by the police. The incident took place in Agam Singh Nagar near Panchnai Bridge. The accused have been identified as Muskan Gurung and Utkarsh Soni.
According to reports, on 26th May, Manju Gurung, a resident of Agam Singh Nagar, was admitted to a private hospital in Siliguri due to health issues. She was discharged after four days on 30th May. On returning home, she noticed on 03rd June that two of her gold chains were missing from the cupboard. When she confronted her daughter Muskan, no clear answer was given, prompting her to file a theft complaint at Pradhan Nagar police station on 04th June.
During the investigation, police found no signs of external entry and grew suspicious of family members. Matters escalated when Muskan suddenly went missing, deepening the police’s suspicions.
Based on a tip-off, police detained Muskan Gurung from Salbari on Thursday. During interrogation, she confessed to stealing the gold chains weighing 30-35 grams and selling them to Utkarsh Soni, a jeweller in Bidhan Market.
Following her statement, police arrested Soni the same night. He admitted to melting the stolen gold, from which around 25 grams were recovered.
Police sources revealed that Muskan was driven by a desire for a luxurious lifestyle and branded products, which led her to steal from her own home. Both accused were produced before the Siliguri court on Friday. Pradhan Nagar police are continuing the investigation.
