Two arrested in Siliguri for attempted sale of 1876 US Trade Dollars

Siliguri, 12th July: In a joint operation, the Detective Department (DD) and the Medical Outpost police arrested two individuals in Siliguri for attempting to sell 1876 US Trade Dollars. The suspects, MD Sharfuddin (54) and Dipanjan Majumdar (48), both residents of Siliguri, were apprehended on Friday.

Reportedly, the accused had traveled from Uttar Dinajpur and were staying at a hotel in Kadamtala under the jurisdiction of the Medical Outpost of Siliguri, where they intended to sell the US Trade Dollars.

Acting on a tip-off, DD officers posed as buyers and approached the suspects, recovering one 1876 US Trade Dollar during the operation. The accused were arrested for failing to provide valid documentation for the currency, valued at approximately Rs 75 lakh.

According to DD sources, the 1876 US Trade Dollar was historically used for business transactions in various countries about 150 years ago. However, possessing or selling such currency is now a legal offense. The Medical Outpost police will present the accused in Siliguri court on Saturday.
