Kharibari, 28th August: Two men were arrested at the Panitanki Indo-Nepal border in Kharibari for allegedly attempting to traffic six women into Nepal, following an operation by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
According to sources, SSB personnel had information about a possible human trafficking attempt through the Panitanki border. When two men arrived at the border with six women and attempted to cross into Nepal, SSB personnel on patrol became suspicious while checking their documents.
The women were subsequently questioned, during which several inconsistencies reportedly came to light. The two men were detained in connection with the incident.
According to the SSB, the accused allegedly planned to traffic four minor girls and two women from Tripura to Nepal by luring them with promises of employment.
Following a complaint from Shakti Vahini, the SSB handed the two accused over to Kharibari Police. Police subsequently arrested them on charges related to the alleged human trafficking attempt.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Nirmal Debbarma, a resident of Tripura, and Chinmoy Basak, a resident of Jalpaiguri.
The two accused were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Friday.
