Siliguri, 06th November: Tension erupted at Medical More in Siliguri following a dispute over vehicle checking and a challan issued by Motor Vehicles Department officials. The driver of a Punjab-registered truck allegedly blocked the road after being issued a challan and obstructed officials from carrying out their duties. The driver also alleged that officials had demanded a bribe. A video of the incident went viral on social media, triggering widespread attention.
Following the incident, ARTO Siliguri officials held a press conference on Friday and explained the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the officials, the truck was intercepted for inspection near Bagdogra Airport at around 9 pm on the day of the incident. The vehicle was carrying a machine part, a portion of which was protruding outside the truck. Officials said this posed a risk of an accident at any time, following which a challan was issued in accordance with the rules.
However, after travelling around five kilometres, the truck driver allegedly blocked the road and obstructed the officials on duty from carrying out their work. The Motor Vehicles Department officials also claimed that a total of 43 cases had been registered against the driver.
Speaking on the matter, Siliguri RTO Milton Chandra Das said that department officials were performing their duties in accordance with government regulations. He made it clear that obstruction of official work or attempts to harass officials would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
