Siliguri, 06th November: Police from Matigara Police Station have foiled an alleged buffalo smuggling attempt from Bihar to Assam, arresting four people and rescuing 11 buffaloes.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, Matigara police conducted an operation in the Tumbajote area on Thursday night. During the operation, police intercepted two suspicious pickup vans bearing Bihar registration numbers. The vehicles were found carrying a total of 11 buffaloes.
When asked to produce valid documents for transporting the animals, the drivers reportedly failed to provide any.
Following this, police arrested four people, including the drivers and their assistants. The arrested individuals have been identified as Jamal Mondal (35), a resident of Assam, and Praveen Kumar (19), Shiv Shankar Roy (32) and Sonu Kumar (19), all residents of Bihar.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the buffaloes were being transported from Bihar to Assam for smuggling purposes.
The four accused were produced before the Siliguri court on Friday. Meanwhile, all 11 rescued buffaloes have been shifted to a safe shelter.
