Siliguri, 17th March: Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms on Monday night caused several trees to fall across Siliguri, damaging property. In the Shaktigarh area, a large tree collapsed onto a house situated between Shaktigarh 1st and 2nd Road, trapping two residents inside. Firefighters arrived promptly and rescued the family members.
Removal work from the house began immediately, with Siliguri Municipal Corporation and the disaster management team on site. In Gandhi Maidan of Ward No. O8, a large banyan tree fell on a shop, with the shopkeeper narrowly escaping injury.
Mayor Gautam Deb visited the affected areas on Monday night and inspected the situation again on Tuesday morning. Rapid efforts are underway to remove fallen trees and restore normalcy. MLA Shankar Ghosh also visited Gandhi Maidan during the night to assess the damage.
