Traditional wool craft on the verge of disappearance, young Siliguri woman keeps it alive

Siliguri, 26th December: With the arrival of winter, memories of woolen clothes from childhood come to mind. However, the touch of modernity has led to the gradual disappearance of handmade wool garments and products. Defying this trend, a young woman is holding on to this fading craft while creating her own path.

Popy Roy, a recent college graduate from Ektiasal, Khudiram Pally, is creating a variety of woolen products, including sweaters, jackets, mufflers, cushions, and even decorative bouquets made from wool. She sells all these items at very affordable prices.

Poppy revealed that she initially learned the craft from her mother and later mastered new designs and techniques through social media. She added that if special initiatives were promoted by the government, more people could take up this craft.

She also stated that anyone interested in learning the craft can be personally taught by her. According to Popy, those who spend their days idle at home or wasting time on mobile phones can open a path to earning by learning this skill.

While demand for woolen products peaks during the four to five months of the winter season, Poppy noted that there is steady demand for her work throughout the year.
