Traders of Siliguri’s Hawkers’ Corner demonstrate against demolition of unauthorized pharmacy

Siliguri, 28th November: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) encountered a significant challenge in its anti-encroachment campaign as traders of Siliguri’s Hawkers’ Corner took to the streets to protest against the demolition of an unauthorized pharmacy constructed at the Nivedita Market adjacent to the Hospital More.

According to reports, the SMC personnel proceeded to dismantle the unauthorized store constructed at the location when they were halted by the traders of Hawker’s Corner. Following this, the traders staged a demonstration in the streets and erected a road blockade. In this regard, the Byabasayee Samiti asserted that they were not notified of the shop’s demolition and cautioned a massive agitation if the shop is demolished.

In response, Siliguri Mayor Goutam Deb stated the requirement of authorization prior to any construction in the region under the SMC and that consequences will be imposed against violation of the guidelines. Additionally, he informed meeting with the concerned businessmen and declared a continued campaign against unauthorized construction.
