Torrential rains in Sikkim leave 3,500 tourists stranded; Indian Army rescues over 2,000

Sikkim, 17th June: Torrential rains in Sikkim on June 16 led to landslides and the destruction of a bridge near Chungthang in North Sikkim, leaving approximately 3,500 tourists stranded. Responding swiftly, the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army and personnel from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) braved the inclement weather to establish a temporary crossing over the flash flood area, facilitating the rescue operation. Stranded tourists were aided in crossing the river and offered essential provisions such as meals, tents, and medical assistance.


As of 3:00 PM on June 17, over 2,000 tourists were successfully rescued, and the evacuation efforts continue. Restoration of road connectivity is underway, while temporary shelters and medical aid stations have been established to support the stranded visitors until the route is fully accessible.
