Siliguri, 13th June: The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) issued a memorandum to the Principal of Siliguri College, Sujit Ghosh, raising several demands following the college’s use by the Election Commission for the Lok Sabha polls.
Siliguri College was occupied by the Election Commission for about two and a half months, during which a DCRC room was constructed, leading to the complete cessation of classes and studies. Although the college reopened on June 10, classes have not yet resumed, causing frustration among students. On Thursday, TMCP staged a protest in front of the Principal’s office, demanding immediate action.
TMCP President of Siliguri College, Om Chakraborty, highlighted that students, particularly those in the boys’ hostel, have been severely impacted, having to stay in rented accommodation for the past two months. The college premises are reportedly in disarray, littered with garbage. Despite a directive from the university to conduct online classes during the closure, no classes were held, allegedly due to negligence. TMCP’s demands include immediate repairs to the college and resuming classes from the following day.
In response, Principal Sujit Ghosh clarified that the college had remained under the Election Commission’s requisition until June 9, and operations resumed only on June 10. He noted that the college infrastructure suffered damage during this period and that several complaints were made to the Election Commission, DM, and SDO, but no responses were received.
