Three women arrested for smuggling cannabis hidden in broomsticks in Rajganj

Rajganj, 08th July: Three women were arrested from Pagla Basti in Krishnanagar Colony under Binnaguri Gram Panchayat, Rajganj, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 35 kg of cannabis hidden inside broomsticks. The arrest was made by Bhorer Alo police station under the Siliguri Police Commissionerate.


The accused have been identified as Bharati Haldar and her daughter Kanika Haldar, both residents of Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar, and their relative Chhaina Das, a resident of Dakshin Dinajpur.

According to police sources, on Monday night, an e-rickshaw carrying broomsticks arrived at a house in the Pagla Basti area. Local residents grew suspicious and passed the information to the police through confidential sources. During the subsequent raid, police discovered cannabis neatly packed inside the broomsticks.


Interrogation revealed that the cannabis had been brought from Cooch Behar disguised as broomsticks and was intended for distribution in multiple locations. Police are continuing their investigation to trace the intended destinations and identify others linked to the smuggling racket.

The arrested women were produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday.
