Siliguri, 20th July: A recent incident in the jurisdiction of Matigara police station has highlighted the risks associated with buying second-hand items through online shopping apps. Reportedly, a thief allegedly listed a stolen mobile phone on an online shopping app for sale.
According to reports, an individual posing as a passenger boarded an e-rickshaw driven by a person named Pradeep Chandra Roy. During the journey, the passenger engaged in conversation and requested to make a phone call using Roy’s mobile phone for a short while. Trusting the passenger, Roy handed over his phone. However, upon reaching a location near Matigara Anchal, the passenger descended from the vehicle and entered a house.
Despite waiting for some time, Roy did not see the passenger return. He eventually entered the house himself, only to discover that it belonged to someone else, realizing that he had fallen victim to deception.
Roy promptly lodged a complaint at Matigara Police Station, based on which the police began their investigation. Using mobile tower location data and CCTV footage, the police successfully tracked down the stolen mobile phone through an online shopping app where it had been listed for sale.
Subsequently, the police recovered the stolen phone and returned it to the e-rickshaw driver. At present, the police have initiated efforts to apprehend the thief responsible for the theft and subsequent sale of the mobile phone.
