Siliguri, 25th May: A clever thief who carried out a daring daylight robbery at a gold shop in Siliguri by posing as a customer has finally been arrested by the police. The accused has been identified as Abhijeet Bhowmik, a resident of Ward Number 45. For the past few months, he had been residing in a rented house in Haiderpara and is known to be a carpenter by profession.
The theft, which took place a few days ago at a gold shop located on Hill Cart Road, resulted in the loss of gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. The incident created an atmosphere of fear among the local gold traders.
Following the robbery, the Pani Tanki Town Outpost police began an investigation. According to officials at the outpost, after committing the theft on 17th May, the accused was again seen on 23rd May near a gold shop in Bidhan Market, allegedly with the intention of committing another theft. Acting on a tip-off from secret sources, undercover police personnel from the Panitanki outpost conducted a raid and apprehended the accused.
The suspect was produced in Siliguri court on Saturday, after which he was taken on remand. During interrogation, Abhijeet confessed to the crime. Based on his statement, the police successfully recovered all the stolen gold jewellery, valued at approximately ₹2.5 lakh.
On Sunday, the accused was presented in court once again, and police sought an extension of his remand for further investigation. Authorities are currently working to uncover whether other individuals are involved in this gang.
