Siliguri, 17th December: A rise in theft incidents across Siliguri has caused concern among residents, while also putting the city police on alert. Despite several cases where accused persons have been arrested and stolen items recovered, miscreants continue to carry out thefts with increasing audacity, both during the night and in broad daylight.
According to sources, more than 30 small and major theft cases have been reported across five police stations and three outposts under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police. It has been learnt that criminals often conduct reconnaissance in different areas of the city before executing thefts when they find an opportunity.
In view of the growing incidents, Pradhan Nagar police station in-charge BD Sarkar has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures to secure their homes. He advised residents not to leave their houses completely vacant while attending programmes or travelling outside the city. Those planning to be away for extended periods were urged to ensure that at least one family member stays back or to deploy a security guard.
Emphasising the importance of surveillance, the officer also recommended installing CCTV cameras at homes. He added that police patrols are being conducted late into the night to ensure public safety and that police personnel remain deployed at all times. The police, he said, are acting promptly on receiving theft complaints and continuing efforts to curb such crimes.
