Siliguri, 16th December: A theft took place in Siliguri’s Dakshin Shanti Nagar area when gold jewellery was stolen while a painter was carrying out work at a residential house. Police from the Ashighar Outpost arrested one person in connection with the incident and recovered the stolen gold jewellery.
The accused has been identified as Shaibal Dey Sarkar, a resident of Dakshin Shanti Nagar. According to police sources, on 03rd December, Shaibal went to the house of Nipendra Barman in Dakshin Shanti Nagar to carry out painting work. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he allegedly stole several gold jewellery items from a locker inside the house.
The theft was noticed a few days later when the locker was opened, following which a written complaint was lodged at the Ashighar Outpost. Police investigated the matter and examined CCTV footage, which helped identify the accused.
Shaibal Dey Sarkar was arrested on 14th December. During interrogation while on police remand, he confessed to the crime and revealed that he had hidden the stolen gold jewellery at his residence. Police conducted a search of his house and successfully recovered the stolen items.
The accused is scheduled to be produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Wednesday. Police are continuing the investigation to determine if others were involved in the theft.
