Tension over posters in Ward No. 03, Siliguri; political confrontation between TMC and BJP

Siliguri, 20th March: Tension broke out between two political parties over the issue of poster placement in Ward No. 03 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Thursday night. The unrest reportedly began after posters reading “Boycott BJP” were put up in the area.

According to allegations, the posters were being put up under the initiative of Ward No. 03 Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato. The BJP has raised objections, stating that although the posters carried the message “Boycott BJP,” they did not mention who was putting them up, which led to questions from BJP workers. This escalated into an argument between BJP workers and TMC councillor and party workers, creating tension in the area. Police reached the spot to bring the situation under control.

Following a complaint filed by the BJP with the Election Commission, the disputed posters were removed later that night.

Speaking on the incident, Siliguri BJP candidate Shankar Ghosh said that a written complaint will be filed at the police station against Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato and TMC workers, alleging that the Trinamool Congress is deliberately trying to create unrest in the area.

On the other hand, Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato countered the allegations, claiming that the BJP candidate has realized he may face defeat in the upcoming elections, and that attempts are being made to create unnecessary tension through their own workers.
