Tension in Siliguri amid BJP’s Bengal bandh: Stone pelting, clashes, and detentions

Siliguri, 28th August: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour bandh across West Bengal on Wednesday in protest against the police baton charge on students during the Nabanna Abhiyan over the R.G. Kar incident. Since early morning, BJP MLAs and workers have taken to the streets of Siliguri, enforcing the bandh by shutting down vehicles and shops in Gurung Basti.

During the bandh, incidents of stone pelting led to the breaking of glass panes on two NBSTC buses. In addition to this, BJP workers attempted to close petrol pumps, shops, and the NBSTC bus stand in the Siliguri junction area.

Upon receiving reports of the disturbances, Pradhan Nagar Police Station’s Inspector-in-Charge (IC), along with ACP Debashish Bose, arrived at the scene with a large police contingent to restore order. However, the situation escalated into a clash between the police and BJP workers, resulting in a scuffle. Several BJP workers were subsequently detained by the police.

Currently, a significant police presence has been deployed throughout the streets of Siliguri to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.
