Siliguri, 28th April: The 12-hour Bengal bandh called by the BJP brought about tension in Siliguri city since the early hours of the morning. As the day progressed, BJP supporters took to the streets in support of the bandh and staging protests.
A rally was held by the party members, blocking the road on Hill Cart Road, while another protest took place at Hashmi Chowk. The police intervened and began detaining protesters, including BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh and Anandamay Barman.
As the protesters were being escorted onto a bus, some sat down on the road, causing further delays. Furthermore, a government bus was stopped on Hill Cart Road and its driver was allegedly harassed and the bus’ windows were also vandalized. The situation was eventually brought under control, but not before the police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
