Jalpaiguri, 28th February: Tension erupted in Jalpaiguri on Saturday morning centring around the distribution of potato storage bonds at Bahadur Cold Storage under the Jalpaiguri Sadar block.
Sources said hundreds of farmers gathered from the early hours to collect bonds required for storing their potatoes. As the crowd increased, chaos and jostling broke out among those standing in the queue.
Police personnel reached the spot to bring the situation under control, during which a scuffle reportedly took place between farmers and police. Amid the commotion, more than a hundred farmers allegedly broke the line and entered the cold storage premises.
In view of the disorder, the cold storage authorities temporarily suspended the bond distribution process. Protesting the decision, farmers later staged a road blockade in the area, leading to traffic disruption for a brief period.
