Surge in dengue cases in rural Bengal; administration blamed for focusing on panchayat polls

A surge in dengue infections in rural areas of Bengal has raised concerns among health officials, who are pointing fingers at the alleged lack of cleanliness in potential mosquito breeding sites. The focus of administrations across the state on the panchayat polls held on July 8 is being cited as a contributing factor to the increase in dengue cases in rural regions.

Around 2.76 lakh dengue tests have been conducted, revealing approximately 3,600 positive cases. It is reported that rural areas account for nearly 70% of the total dengue infections. In an effort to prevent a recurrence of last year’s situation, when Bengal recorded a staggering 42,000 dengue cases (the highest since 2017), the state administration is diligently working to control the current outbreak.
