Darjeeling, 04th April: With the arrival of G20 delegates in the city, street hawkers had been removed for some days. To ensure a scenic and pleasant view, for the visit of esteemed guests the city of Darjeeling witnessed a full refreshing look. Pleasing the eyes of not just the delegates but also the new countenance was warmly welcomed and appreciated by the residents. Garnering appreciation for the move, the civic body decided to remove them permanently.
Students and locals supporting the move asserted that Chowrasta was the main hub of not just locals but also tourists and it should be kept as it was before, clean without hawkers. They further added that because of hawkers, it was not easy to walk, and alleged that they made the Mall road area dirty.
The Darjeeling Municipality has decided to rehabilitate them for which a meeting has also been called. Recently a lot of hawkers had started setting up new shops there taking up the figure to about 90.
