Student of standard 8 found dead after returning from Matigara school, family alleges assault and humiliation

Siliguri, 04th January: A 14-year-old student of standard 8 of Matigara Balika Vidyalaya allegedly killed herself after returning home from school, sparking grief and anger across the area.


According to reports, the deceased student, identified as, Priya Roy had gone to school on Saturday for admission. The family claims that the school management refused her admission, citing alleged discrepancies in her examination results. It is further alleged that the student was taken into a closed room inside the school, where she was assaulted.

After being allegedly humiliated and sent out of the school, Priya returned home directly. She did not inform anyone about the incident and went into her room wearing her school uniform.


When no movement was noticed for a long time, her family became suspicious and broke open the door. The student was found hanging inside the room. Police were immediately informed.

Following the incident, the student’s mother lodged a written complaint at Matigara police station. In the complaint, she stated that if there had been any issue with her daughter’s results, the school administration should have called the guardians and resolved it through discussion. She alleged that being sent out of school caused the student severe mental shock, leading to the incident.

The mother has demanded strict punishment for those responsible.
Police have registered a case and begun investigation.

The incident has raised serious questions regarding the treatment of students and mental pressure in schools. The school authorities have not issued any response so far. Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
