Smuggling racket busted in Siliguri under guise of vegetable trade; one arrested with 32 kg cannabis

Siliguri, 13th November: In a major crackdown, the plainclothes police of Pradhan Nagar Police Station busted a cannabis smuggling racket that was operating under the guise of vegetable trading.


Reportedly, acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid near Siliguri Junction on Wednesday night and arrested a youth with 32 kilograms of cannabis.

According to police sources, the accused had hidden the cannabis inside vegetable-filled bags and planned to transport it to Kolkata. Police recovered five packets weighing around 32 kg from two bags. The arrested person has been identified as Shashi Kar, a resident of Siliguri’s Baghajatin Colony.


Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had brought the drugs from Cooch Behar and was trying to send them to Kolkata. He was arrested in the presence of IC Basudev Sarkar of Pradhan Nagar Police Station.

A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and the accused has been produced before the Siliguri court. Police are investigating the matter further.
