Siliguri, 10th June: Ward No. 05 Councillor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Anita Mahato, addressed the media at the Siliguri Journalist Club on Tuesday, denying allegations of illegal construction and extortion. She claimed the charges were politically motivated and targeted at her for being a BJP councillor.
The controversy began after Mayor Gautam Deb visited Ward No. 05 under the ‘Manusher Kache Cholo’ programme, where local residents raised complaints against Mahato. Following this, Borough Committee No. 01 Chairperson Gargi Chatterjee also filed a complaint, after which the Mayor issued a strong message on the matter.
In her response, Mahato alleged a political conspiracy involving both the Mayor and the Borough Chairperson. She maintained that all allegations were false and demanded proof to substantiate the claims.
Borough Chairperson Gargi Chatterjee, however, stated that the complaints originated from residents of the area and maintained that if there was no wrongdoing, there should be no concern.
