SMC temporary workers protest in Siliguri over delay in salary payment

Siliguri, 25th April: Temporary workers of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) staged a protest on Thursday, demanding timely disbursal of their remuneration. The protesting employees, mostly engaged in cleaning drains and roads in Ward No. 41, alleged repeated delays in salary payments.

According to the workers, there are about 60 to 70 temporary employees in the ward who have not been receiving their salaries on time for several months. Although salaries are supposed to be paid by the 05th of each month, payments are reportedly being made only after the 20th or 25th, with this month’s salary still unpaid as of the 24th.

The employees claimed that despite informing both the Councillor of Ward No. 41 and the MMIC, no action has been taken to resolve the issue. They questioned the Municipal Corporation’s delay and criticized the indifference of public representatives.

Responding to the allegations, MMIC Manik Dey said that salaries are paid every month and attributed the current delay to unspecified reasons, dismissing the workers’ claims as baseless.
