Siliguri, 28th July: In a move toward sustainable urban practices, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated steps for proper thermocol waste management, following the model adopted in Kolkata. A crucial meeting regarding this was held at the SMC office, chaired by Mayor Gautam Deb.
The meeting was attended by MMIC members, representatives of the Regulated Market, and traders from other city markets. A detailed presentation was made on thermocol waste management, including insights gained by an SMC delegation that recently visited Kolkata to study their system.
In the first phase, the project will be implemented at the Regulated Market, funded under the 15th Finance Commission grant. Mayor Deb stated that discussions have already been held with West Bengal Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna regarding the project.
Along with thermocol waste disposal, the modernization of the Regulated Market will include an improved drainage system and beautification efforts. Officials are optimistic that this step will move the city closer to an environmentally friendly market infrastructure.
