Siliguri, 23rd May: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has undertaken the initiative to restore the city’s deteriorating rivers. The work of revitalising the Mahananda River as well as cleaning the Siliguri and the rivers has been initiated under the Mahananda Action Plan.
As per reports, the restoration project, estimated at Rs 10 crore in its initial phase, aims to clean the rivers and beautify the riverbanks. Cleaning operations have commenced to ensure normal water levels during the monsoon season and mitigate the risk of flooding.
In this regard, Mayor Gautam Deb emphasized the critical significance of the project, highlighting that the rivers have been neglected for a prolonged time. He asserted that the previous administration failed to address the issue. However, the current Trinamool-led board has taken decisive action.
Notably, this was the first effort by the Irrigation Department since independence to rehabilitate Siliguri’s rivers. The Mayor further announced plans to extend the restoration efforts, including the Fuleswari, Jorapani, Mahishmari, and Sahu rivers.
