Siliguri, 13th June: Shops have been illegally constructed in Siliguri Hawkers Corner by occupying the land of Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority. Although the shop owners were asked to lift their stores several times, they allegedly disregarded the orders. Hence, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation conducted a demolition drive in the said area on Sunday.
Ranjan Sarkar, a member of the BoA at SMC, and other officials reached the spot this morning. He said that illegal land occupancy will not be accepted in any way. Several shops were demolished after inspecting the area.
As soon as the demolition drive started, some residents of the area started protesting. They complained that although many other lands are occupied in several places, no initiative is being taken against them.
