Siliguri, 31st July: After a brief pause, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation resumed its campaign against encroachment on Tuesday, following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s directives. On Wednesday, the corporation’s bulldozer demolished illegally constructed shops in the Mallaguri area.
Municipal employees dismantled shops that were encroaching on roads and drainage systems, prompting strong reactions from the shop owners. A female shop owner claimed she received no prior notice or time to prepare before the demolition.
Another woman, who has been running a small shop over the drainage for 35 years to support her family, expressed her distress. With her husband ill, she and her son have relied on the shop for their livelihood. The demolition has left them without a source of income. The woman further criticized the CM, stating that they are now facing hardships because they voted for ‘Didi’.
