Fulbari, 09th February: After undergoing a major renovation, the Sahudangi’s Baitarani electric crematorium was formally handed over to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation by the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA) on Monday. The handover took place at a programme where the relevant documents were presented to Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb.
Sources said the renovation of the Sahudangi’s Baitarani electric crematorium was carried out at a cost of approximately ₹1 crore 23 lakh 13 thousand under the initiative of the SJDA.
Besides Mayor Gautam Deb, the programme was attended by Siliguri Municipal Corporation Chairman Pratul Chakraborty, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar, SJDA Chairman Dilip Dugar, MMIC Dulal Dutta, along with several officials and public representatives from the municipal corporation and SJDA.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Gautam Deb said the Baitarani electric crematorium at Sahudangi was originally constructed under the supervision of the North Bengal Development Department. Initially, the responsibility of maintaining the crematorium was with Fulbari-I Gram Panchayat. The SJDA has now completed the renovation work and handed over the facility to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
The mayor further informed that the crematorium was formally inaugurated on Monday and is expected to become fully operational within the next seven days.
