Siliguri, 30th January: Sreeja Namasharma from Deshbandhu Para in Siliguri secured the first rank in the West Bengal Police Service (WBPS) in the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) examination, earning widespread admiration across the city and North Bengal. At just 26 years old, her exceptional achievement has made her family and the entire region proud.
Sreeja, inspired by her father Babul Namasharma, a long-serving and respected police officer, had dreamed of joining the force since childhood. Her path to success was far from easy. In 2018, both of her father’s kidneys failed, plunging the family into severe financial difficulties that made continuing studies, and even private coaching, extremely challenging. Tragically, Babul Namasharma passed away suddenly in November 2023. Motivated by her father’s legacy, Sreeja persevered and appeared for the WBPSC examination.
The results, announced recently, revealed that she had secured the top rank in the state. Sreeja completed her higher secondary studies at Siliguri Girls’ High School and earned both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Kalyani University. Between 2023-24, she appeared in seven competitive examinations at both state and central levels, succeeding in all without any coaching, relying entirely on her own efforts.
Currently, Sreeja is working as an Assistant Section Officer at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Kolkata. She recently visited her Siliguri home on leave, just as the news of her achievement reached her. While her father is no longer alive to witness her wearing the uniform, Sreeja remains determined to join the service, with aspirations of eventually becoming an IPS officer.
Following the announcement of her success, Shankar Ghosh, MLA of Siliguri, visited her home to congratulate her. He remarked that Sreeja’s achievement would serve as a major inspiration for young girls in the city, motivating many to pursue WBPSC and other competitive examinations with dedication.
