Siliguri’s Eastern Bypass sees intensified traffic enforcement after recent accidents

Siliguri, 30th November: A series of road accidents on the Eastern Bypass has claimed the lives of several people, from children to the elderly.

On Saturday, another tragic accident led to the death of a child. Following the incident, the Ashighar Sub Traffic Guard installed barricades on the stretch, but locals complained that traffic personnel remain insufficient.

Residents alleged that while a few officers are posted at certain turns, most parts of the bypass lack supervision. Vehicles continue to drive on the wrong side, and several traffic points reportedly have no police in charge. Illegal parking along the road was also widely observed.

Although the administration initially responded after the accident, locals claimed that the situation soon returned to normal.

However, on Sunday morning, the traffic department appeared more active. Traffic police conducted a special speed gun operation at the Dumping Ground More, penalising overspeeding vehicles and imposing fines on helmetless bikers.
