Siliguri, 09th June: Tension gripped Siliguri’s Devidanga area on Monday as traders shut down the local market in protest against a firing incident that occurred on Sunday night. The closure of Devidanga Bazaar was decided collectively by local businessmen early Monday.
According to reports, three rounds of gunfire were aimed at intimidating residents who had raised their voices against the growing drug trade in the area. Panic spread among locals following the incident.
Police acted promptly and arrested the accused, Deepak Kamati alias Deepu, recovering a firearm, a magazine, and an empty shell from his possession.
In a strong show of resistance, locals called for a bandh in the area on Monday. Shops remained completely closed as residents demanded immediate action to eliminate drug-related activities from Siliguri’s Devidanga.
