Siliguri, 08th December: In a strict move to curb road accidents and strengthen traffic safety, the Traffic Department of Siliguri Metropolitan Police conducted a special campaign on Monday in the Loknath Bazar area adjoining the Eastern Bypass under the Ashighar Sub Traffic Guard.
According to traffic police sources, bike riders found travelling without helmets were stopped and fined on the spot. Several challans were issued during the drive for violation of safety norms.
Officials stated that a large number of deaths are occurring in road accidents due to riders not wearing helmets. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, many motorists continue to flout traffic rules.
A senior traffic department officer said that although awareness drives have been conducted for a long time, non-compliance with rules continues. As a result, the department was compelled to take strict action. The special checking drive will continue in the coming days as well, the officer added.
