Siliguri, 28th July: Tensions flared during the board meeting of Siliguri Municipal Corporation as the Manipur issue took centre stage. During the meeting, the Trinamool board proposed a resolution condemning the incident in Manipur. In response, the BJP councillors raised their voices, expressing concerns over violence against women in the state and the lack of acknowledgement for such incidents. Discontent with this, the BJP decided to walk out of the board meeting.
Amit Jain, the opposition leader, emphasized that many women in Bengal face harassment, and the people of Siliguri are facing water scarcity, among other issues. He accused the board of diverting attention from these pressing local problems by concentrating on the Manipur issue. Jain further criticized the increasing number of criminals in Siliguri and the state, suggesting that authorities need to address these matters urgently.
Additionally, the board meeting discussed the long-standing case concerning a multi-storey building on Bidhan Road near Hashmi Chowk. A proposal to withhold approval for the building was introduced, leading the CPIM to allege that they had not received a copy of the resolution. Consequently, the CPIM councillors also decided to walk out of the board meeting in protest.
