Siliguri MLA notifies PHE alleging SMC of negligence causing contaminated water consumption by residents

Siliguri, 13th June: Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh has brought attention to the alleged supply of contaminated drinking water for consumption by the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) amid the recent water crisis in the city. In a letter addressed to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) office, MLA Ghosh expressed concerns and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

The MLA highlighted that the supplied water, sourced from the Mahananda River due to repair and purifying works on the Teesta River, was declared unfit for consumption by Mayor Gautam Deb shortly after distribution commenced. In this regard, the MLA questioned how such water could be supplied without undergoing the required testing.

On the other hand, Mayor Gautam Deb refuted the allegations, attributing the issue to natural calamities and asserting that all necessary measures were taken. He emphasized that if the matter proceeds to the court then appropriate actions will be undertaken as per the law.
