The campaign was inaugurated by Siliguri Police Commissioner Gaurav Sharma, IG North Bengal DP Singh and Chairman of the Board of Administrators of Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Gautam Dev.
During the inauguration, stickers of “Respect Woman” were installed in the taxi and cab vehicles of Bagdogra Airport and NJP Taxi Stand by senior police officials and other dignitaries. The stickers are provided with the emergency helpline numbers of Siliguri Metropolitan Police and also have boxes marked to note down the owner’s name, his/her contact number and vehicle registration number. On the occasion, Siliguri Police Commissioner Gaurav Sharma said that Siliguri is an important city. With major junction points such as NJP station and Bagdogra airport, a large number of people come into the city every day from outside. Therefore, in view of the safety of women, a campaign named “Respect Woman” has been started on behalf of the department.
The Commissioner further added that if women face any problem while travelling to Terai, Dooars and the hills, immediate action will be taken after the matter is reported on the helpline number issued. He said that the Siliguri Metropolitan Police is committed to stopping any kind of illegal activities in the city. Meanwhile, Goutam Deb, Chairman of Siliguri Municipal Corporation lauded the initiative.
