Siliguri, 16th July: While a complete lockdown has been imposed for 7 days across 47 wards under Siliguri Municipal Corporation, several residents of Siliguri Ward No. 8 staged demonstrations today as Naya Bazar was spotted disobeying the lockdown protocols and functioning normally.
Locals stated that considering the lockdown enforced across the city, Naya Bazar should be shut down accordingly. As huge crowds are regularly spotted in the area, locals fear that the virus might spread rapidly if not closed immediately.
The locals also alleged that despite reporting the matter repeatedly to the Merchant Association, no one intervened in this regard. The agitated locals warned that if the market is not closed immediately, they will have no other choice than to close the market’s entrance tomorrow by themselves.
Meanwhile, upon receiving the news, the Khalpara Outpost police reached the spot shortly after.
In this regard, Ward Co-ordinator Khushboo Mittal stated that she supports the decision taken by the locals.
Those who want to close the market first should close there flour mills , tea trade and hotels
