Siliguri hotels bar entry to Bangladeshi nationals amid protests

Siliguri, 26th December: Hotels in Siliguri have barred entry to Bangladeshi nationals, displaying posters at multiple properties across the city. The Siliguri Hotel Owners Association implemented the decision in response to ongoing unrest in Bangladesh and local protests in Siliguri.

The move comes amid demonstrations against violence in Bangladesh. Since Friday morning, several hotels have enforced a complete ban on Bangladeshi citizens. Hotel associations from Cooch Behar to Malda have extended their support for the measure.

Ujjwal Ghosh, joint secretary of the Siliguri Hotel Owners Association, said that following the indefinite closure of Indian visa centres in Bangladesh, the association imposed the entry ban. The rule will apply to around 180 hotels under the association. Previously allowed exemptions for medical and educational purposes have now been fully withdrawn.
